HiveGate Single Entrance
$16.95
HiveGateâ„¢ provides a missing link between your hive’s entrance and the winter cluster by positioning the hive entrance inside the hive, directly under the cluster, where the colony can actively control what comes in and goes out.
Because the entrance is directly under the cluster, HiveGate allows the colony to control entry more effectively. It also helps to safeguard your bees from many types of pests such as wasps, yellowjackets, other robbing honeybees, wax moths, the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina), and other pests and predators.
The HiveGateâ„¢ is a plastic tube that’s laid on top of the bottom board of a Langstroth hive. The beekeeper closes off the rest of the hive’s entrance so that the bees can use the HiveGateâ„¢ tube as their entrance. Once bees walk through the tube’s entrance, they enter into the cluster in the center of the hive.
To close off the entrance, there are a few options available. You can use the HiveGateâ„¢ Adapter Plate (not included) with up to two HiveGates at once. The adapter plate is used to close off the rest of the entrance. You may also fabricate your own adapter by modifying a standard wooden entrance reducer. You’ll need to ensure the entrance reducer provides a 2-7/8 x 3/8″ opening for the HiveGateâ„¢ to pass through.
Most beekeepers prefer to use one HiveGateâ„¢ per hive. Some larger hives may require two HiveGates side by side to allow more effective bee traffic.
The HiveGateâ„¢ system was created by Bee-IQ Solutions in New Zealand.
